The content has been created in close collaboration with clinicians who have many years of practical experience in the field of spinal cord injury.
In this course, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of spinal cord injuries. You will learn about the various types of injuries and the psychological and physical impact they have on patients, including the impact on bladder, bowel, and sexual function.
Completing the full course offers you the opportunity to increase your holistic knowledge on nursing patients with a spinal cord injury, allowing you to offer them and their families the best care possible.
In this lesson, you will learn more about the physiology, aetiology, incidence, and various types of spinal cord injury. Additionally, we will discuss the limitations that spinal cord injury can impose on bladder and bowel function, sexuality, and fertility.
This lesson (which is also part of the Hollister eLearning on The Urinary System) provides an overview of the nervous system of the urinary tract. It gives you an insight into the neurological mechanisms that control the bladder, which is essential for comprehending the changes in bladder function seen in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI).
This lesson provides an overview of the nervous system of the gastrointestinal tract. It dives deeper into the neurological mechanisms that control the bowel in order to help you better understand possible changes in bowel function with SCI patients.
In this lesson, you will gain insight into patients’ individual experiences throughout various stages while recovering and adjusting to living with a spinal cord injury or illness. In addition, we will provide greater detail regarding the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation processes.
In this interactive story, you will be presented with three dilemmas. The decisions you make will affect the dialogue between you and Leonora, a patient with an SCI for whom you are caring. Through this, you will be able to provide Leonora with the necessary guidance and tools to make informed decisions that will improve her current situation.
The first two animations focus on dysfunction of the bladder and briefly explain reflex and areflexic bladder function. They are from The Urinary System eLearning lesson on the Nervous System and Bladder Control. The next two animations concentrate on dysfunction of the bowel and inform on reflex and areflexic bowel. The fifth animation covers vaginal splinting and is based on the specific experiences of a clinician.
After working through the eLearning lessons, you can complete a test that includes 10 interactive questions. To successfully pass the test, you will need to answer a minimum of 7 questions correctly.
