Military veteran Derek Rutherford found himself at a crossroads when a cancer diagnosis led to ostomy surgery. Today, he proudly embraces an active family life and defies any potential constraints that his permanent stoma might impose.
Derek lives in the U.K. and transitioned from a demanding 22-year military career to a civilian role as an outdoor activity instructor. When he received a colorectal cancer diagnosis in 2019, he felt shock and disbelief, as well as fear about his future.
Derek’s cancer treatment included undergoing ostomy surgery. His initial recovery period involved a two-week hospital stay, where he was monitored by his clinical team. Upon discharge, Derek’s recovery journey continued at home, and it took several weeks for him to regain strength and resume normal activities.
Realizing the benefits of an ostomy
Adapting to life with a stoma requires patience – something that didn’t come naturally to Derek. Eventually, however, he got used to caring for his stoma, mastering the art of changing his ostomy pouch, and adjusting to his new bowel routine. "I do love putting on a new bag,” says Derek. “It's like coming out of a shower and putting on a new set of clothes!"
As time passed, Derek began noticing how nice it was to live his daily life without always worrying about unexpected trips to the toilet. Before he was diagnosed with cancer, he had ulcerative colitis and had to go to the toilet four, five, or even six times a day. And, unfortunately, he often had to spend quite a bit of time in there. "I love that I can now go to the toilet, clean up, and come right back out – there's no need to disappear for lengthy periods,” says Derek. “And sometimes I can just wait and go when I get home; my stoma has given me a normal routine.”
With an ostomy, Derek can engage in activities he previously avoided, such as long walks and social events. His increased sense of freedom and control has significantly improved his outlook and quality of life. He can now focus on enjoying his day-to-day activities without constant anxiety and discomfort.
Fully embracing life with a stoma
The combination of expert care, steadfast family support, and Derek's own resilience has paved the way for a fun and active life filled with love. “Getting my stoma hasn't stopped me from doing anything; in fact, although it wasn't easy at first, my life has gotten better," says Derek. “My wife has been at my side through every stage of this journey,” he continues. “She's the driving force that keeps me going, the one who knows what I love doing and what I want to achieve, and she encourages me every step of the way."
Derek doesn’t let his stoma limit his physical activity, and his athletic achievements are inspiring. He enjoys running and cycling, and has successfully completed multiple ultra marathons and Iron Man events.
Derek also encourages people with stomas to connect with the ostomy community. "Engage on social media platforms to get support, share stories, and draw inspiration from those who have navigated similar challenges," he says. “When you’re faced with uncertainties, don't hesitate to reach out and ask questions; there is a wealth of collective wisdom and shared experiences that can be a source of guidance and encouragement."
